Apple is adding a new hardware security feature to its iPad Pro that was originally found on newer Apple MacBooks. The feature disconnects hardware microphones when the lid (of a MacBook) is closed or when an iPad Pro’s case is closed. For the feature to work with an iPad Pro, the case must be MFI compliant, which is true for the cases Apple sells as well as others.
The feature is designed to prevent any audio eavesdropping if a device is compromised and stops any microphone data from being available even if a hacker has complete control of the device.
This is a major step forward for security and privacy and highlights good design and security principles by leveraging hardware-based security features.
