Matthias Eberl, a journalist focused on data privacy, recently published an article highlighting how the popular social media app TikTok, uses a variety of ways to collect its users’ information. The article is in German but he covered many of the main points in a Twitter thread.
Among other things, the app sends search terms to Facebook, tracks who watches videos via Google Analytics, and uses a variety of fingerprinting techniques to identify individual users. Techniques include canvas fingerprinting and audio fingerprinting.
