Government provides free phones full of surveillance malware [Forbes]

Lifeline Assistance, a government-funded program designed to provide low-income households with free smartphones has come under fire due to malware installed on smartphones from Assurance Wireless, one of the programs phone providers.

The smartphone contains two pre-installed Chinese malware which provides a backdoor to the device, collects private data, and displays ads on the device.

As a result, Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) will ask the FCC why malware-ridden phones are being shipped.
