Android app developers left customer data exposed

Via Forbes

Security researchers found that thousands of app developers left their customers personal data exposed on Firebase, an app development platform owned by Google.

The data leaked included over 7M email addresses, chat messages, 4.4M usernames, 1M passwords, and 5M telephone numbers.

The data was leaked because over 11,000 apps had their Firebase database exposed publicly. While this is the result of misconfiguration or oversight on the side of developers, the Firebase platform should also have security and privacy settings on as a default so this level of exposure shouldn’t happen so frequently or easily.
